Recently announced winner of the Minot Symphony Orchestra Young Composer’s Competition. The winning piece, “Moving On,” will be premiered by the MSO on Saturday, March 4th.

The Bismarck-Mandan Wind Ensemble will premiere the composition “Resigned to Hope” on Saturday, March 11th in conjunction with the North Dakota Junior High All-State Band Festival.

Hi, my name is Jordan Boehm. Originally from Mandan, North Dakota, I hold degrees from the University of Mary (BM & BS), University of Northern Iowa (MM), and began a doctoral degree at the University of Iowa before returning to teaching. While attending these institutions, I performed with a variety of ensembles ranging from jazz bands, wind ensembles, orchestras, choirs, and various chamber groups. Notable among them includes lead trumpet for UIowa’s Johnson County Landmark, and being a member of the Northern Brass Quintet (UNI faculty ensemble). I have also been fortunate enough to appear with groups such as the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Chorale, Minot Symphony Orchestra, Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus, Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra, and Bis-Man Big Band to name a few.

I have held adjunct positions at Bismarck State College and Dickinson State University. My graduate studies at the University of Northern Iowa also placed me in a teaching role as a graduate assistant/instructor, and I have experience in middle and high schools. My background in education, as well as performance, has led to me working with individuals and ensembles ranging from first year musicians to college music majors. I have appeared as a featured soloist and guest artist with multiple ensembles, and always incorporate a knowledge of music history/development and its applications when building programs, presentations, and set lists for schools.

As a composer, my works have been heard in various states throughout the Midwest, and also in Italy. Many of them were written specifically with personal groups in mind, while others have been commissioned by groups like Joe Friday, members of the North Dakota State University Horn Quartet, members of the University of Minnesota Clarinet Quartet, Century High School (Bismarck, ND), and Legacy High School, for whom I wrote the school song. I have had the privilege of recording my piece “Spillway” with UNI Jazz Band One, and also directing the same piece with Johnson County Landmark. “Yearning for Ordinary” was just released as a track on the University of Northern Iowa album from 2019: Vibrant Lights

A Song for Health is a project thought up by Martin Schippers and Steven Verhelst. The idea, as the image states, is to show support towards health care and service workers, but also to keep music happening in some form - hence #musicdoesntstop. Personally it was some good fun to sit down and record the quintet version; it also is helping get the face back up to snuff. Check out musicdoesntstop.com for a number of various editions of the sheet music and the piano track if you would like to play as well. If you click through the video, the same account has a recording of the duet version as well.
